Ben Perring's Adventures at Etch
My Experience
My name is Ben, and for the past two weeks, I have been working at Etch UK on a mini Internship / Work Experience. This has been extremely interesting and helpful for me as someone who is soon to be moving into the professional world, being a second year university student and placement applicant.
Etch UK is a business that piques my interest due to its innovative approach to providing digital experiences to consumers on behalf of clients. This is something that requires a very up to date knowledge of how consumer bases work and what techniques work to capture engagement and attention. Their community driven, collaborative and creative approach resonates strongly with my interests and it has been a pleasure working for them over the two weeks.
Here's what I got up to during my two weeks with Etch...
Learning and using Miro 📊
I was introduced to the Miro platform, which Etch UK uses to collate and organise digital formats of notes and diagrams in a digestible format. After sitting in on an internal meeting, I was tasked with transferring and organising the notes from a physical whiteboard onto the Miro platform for digital use.

Researching industry segments and competitors for a industry overview
I was tasked with researching the gaming industry in order to provide a competitor analysis in a deck format. This allowed data to be put into a visual content form including statistics and other charts. Additionally, I researched social marketing channels currently in place alongside potential for expansion in the future.
In addition, I put together information about a potential future marketing campaign on this new platform, researching key figures about the platform alongside competitors presence and pricing.

Submitting Aviva Pension payments
I was given the responsibility by the bookkeeping team of submitting the businesses pension payments report, which was successfully completed through the online portal.
Learning and Utilising Umbraco
After being given an introduction to Umbraco by Steve, I was given the opportunity to play around with the framework to create my own post outlining my experiences at Etch over the period of two weeks. Learning the program was enjoyable and intuitive, and being able to utilise some of the built in tools and functions allowed me to create a modern and functional blog post which you are currently reading!

Segmenting Audiences for Marketing Targeting
After being given an introduction to how marketing is targeted towards specific groups, James tasked me with sorting some audience segments to aid an upcoming marketing campaign. By using Excel, I was able to sort and filter by specific variables that will be important when choosing which demographics to market to. This helped to increase my knowledge surrounding marketing techniques as well as increasing my proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

Slack Workflow Reminders
I was tasked to create Slack workflow reminders to ping in a specific channel a week before the awareness day. This will allow employees in Etch to know what is going on and reminds them to prepare for them. This helped me to learn how to automate other Slack tasks, including replying to messages on schedules and requesting input from users.

Alongside these tasks, I was given the opportunity to meet many people working in different sectors in the business, including marketing, finances, project management, web design and many more. They were able to give me introductions to their roles and show me what they did on a day to day basis which was extremely interesting and gave me an insight to how the business worked as a whole operation.
Some tools that I have learnt how to use during my time at Etch include Slack, Umbraco and Miro, alongside progressing my competency with the Microsoft suite including Excel to sort and manage data and PowerPoint to deliver deck style information. These competencies will definitely give me a head start in the world of work that I am soon to be a part of!
The atmosphere was enjoyable and everybody in the office were kind and able to help me if I needed it. I have fully enjoyed my time working at Etch and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that I was given.
